Five WFH Tips While We #stopthespread

As people socially distance during the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us are suddenly working from home and feeling adrift without our regular routines and face-to-face connections.

While the ramifications of social distancing and remote work are a struggle, it’s the most important thing we can be doing right now to stop the spread of COVID-19. Social distancing will help us flatten the curve of the virus and prevent overwhelming hospitals. We need businesses to lead boldly and practice compassionate capitalism by supporting people during this pandemic.

Remote work is not unusual at Allocadia, we have a number of employees that regularly work from home. These WFH experts have been sharing tips internally, and now we want to share them with you in the hopes that it helps make your life during quarantine easier.

Here are five tried and tested tips to help you survive working from home:

  1. Set up your workstation – this is where you will spend a decent chunk of time for the next two to three weeks so make sure it’s functional. The kitchen counter workstation, while prime real estate for snacking, can only last so long.
  2. Use video as much as possible – it’s so nice to see other people’s faces, especially when you live alone, and it’s scientifically been shown to provide more connection than just a phone call. Don’t be shy to be the first one to put your video on, we’re all craving the social connection right now.
  3. Create a schedule – when your new workstation is in the center of your home it’s hard not to feel like you should be constantly doing something. However, this is a marathon not a sprint. Take coffee breaks, do some stretching, or call a friend to give yourself a break. And remember to shut off for the end of the day, maybe even throw a blanket over the workstation if needed to create a boundary between work time and personal time. Out of sight, out of mind.
  4. Lean into the flexibility available – this is the big one for anyone that is currently working from home with tiny humans walking (let’s be real – running) around. If you have a partner and they are also working from home, try dividing the day so you each can create a bit of work/family balance. At Allocadia we have a people-first philosophy and are supporting families to take the space to figure out what works best for their specific needs.
  5. Communicate often – if you were in person, you would have grabbed a coffee pre-meeting and bantered with your teammates. Schedule afternoon coffee breaks with your team to catch up on life, not just work projects. Join video meetings early to check-in or if you read something funny feel free share it.

We may be practicing social distancing, but we’re all in this together and we’ll come out stronger when we lend a hand to others in need. Take care and stay healthy!
